In order to address the homelessness issue in Venice area, there are 3 main focuses of this project :
1 ) Bring luxury living feel into affordable level
2) Human Interactions
3) Helping People
Notes :
1. Children Playground
2. Outdoor Theater
3. Services and Offices (surrounded by extended canals)
4. Outdoor Grill
5. Basement Parking Entrance
6. Gazebo
*Dotted Square = Retail and Marketplace
As human interaction is one of the main focus of this project, the public spaces throughout the site also functions as public parks for people around the neighborhood to use. The repetition used in positioning the apartment buildings are used because it is the best solution to utilize the space in order to fit as many units as possible without the feeling of crowded and claustrophobic. Therefore, in order to break away from the sense of repetition, three different parks are distributed throughout the site, which are: children playground, canals which are the extensions of existing venice canals that crosses the site, outdoor theater and barbecue park.
Notes :
1. Closet
2. Mail Room
3. Studio Space
4. Community Room
5. Laundry Room
The arc design are used to achieve another goal of this project which is to bring the feel of luxury living to affordable level while, perpendicularly, also bring the sense of openness which previously received from the precedent, Casa de Vidro. Moreover, the position of shared private spaces, such as living room and dining room also helps in increasing the relationship between the occupants; when they are going out from their private spaces (bedrooms), every elements of the unit are within their sight and they are able to interact with each other easy and seamlessly.
The apartment building itself consists of 2 buildings that are mirrored. each of them consists of 6 units. 3 bedroom units on the first floor, 1 and 2 bedrooms unit on the second and third floor, and 4 bedroom unit on the 4th floor. The excess space on the first floor are used for community room where all occupants within the apartment building can interact with each other, services, and studio space for the occupants to use. Since this is an affordable and supporting houses, having a studio space for those in needs for work may hopefully help them get back in track of their life.
Notes :
1. Studio Space
2. Retail Space
3. Marketplace
4. Public Restroom
5. Public Shower
Since the site is near 2 big tourist attractions, which are Venice canals and Venice Beach, public restroom and shower are needed. Beside ringing benefits to the tourists, they also allow the visitors to pass retail and marketplace. The marketplace provides cheap shared rent spaces for the occupants to display and sell their works. Therefore, completing the third goal of this project, which is helping those in needs.
Since the site is right next to luxury neighborhood of Venice canals, it is important to build an apartment that can blend in to the surroundings, in terms of height, scale, and also the sense of luxury living that is previously mentioned.
